Manaus is 1000 miles in land from the sea. We have now done about 6100 miles from Southampton. Air temp 92°F 34 °C forecast for midday. River temp is 29°C according to ships info. Entered Amazon proper Sunday at 2000 hours, after crossing Amazon Bar with only 4m clearance between keel and sea/river bed took about 6 hours to cross the bar. Technically crossed the Equator in the Amazon so we have not seen 'King Neptune' yet.
Yesterday they said we were in the deepest part of the Amazon river when we had 150m below ships keel. A whole day travelling on river, lots of islands and river traffic of all sizes, canoes with oars, river cruisers, usually family owned. As we travel there are constantly changing riverside scenes, one hut, then clusters of 3-10 plus huts, small towns and even churches on the riverside. Then no sign of any homes for a few miles.
Today going on a city tour, including a visit to the opera house, then tomorrow a flight over the Amazon.
Tuesday 31st Jan we were in Alter de Chao which had only 3 main streets.
Both of us are really relaxed and chilled, we have been dancing too, and can now do Square Tango.
It was a nice feeling last Saturday, not having to come home after 14 nights!
Hope everyone at home, is doing OK, take care. We set off back down river to Parentins late tomorrow, then Santarem, then off to Recife. We will cross the Equator when we turn SE towards Recife, Brazil after exiting the Amazon in a NE direction to safely cross the bar.
A record of the places visited, sights and events on our travels since 2012 when we circumnavigated South America. Now in January 2018 we are globe trotting again.
