Visit Rabaul, Simpson Harbour east Coast of New Britain in Papua New Guinea ( PNG)

Arrived 08:00 in Rabaul PNG, formerly known as the Pearl of the Pacific built in a large volcanic caldera surrounded by active and dormant volcanoes.

Lat 04° 12.1'S Long 152° 10.1'E.
Air 27° C / 81° F Sea 30° C / 86° F.

Took a trip organised by one of the guest on our dinner table. A great day thank you Paul N-W!

Mo and I in the end coped well with the weather heat and humidity.

Mini bus was air conditioned which helped enormously.

Much of the existing infrastructures still recovering from a massive volcanic eruption in 1994, including the original airport which is still under ash up to 2-3m deep.

Travelled to see hot springs, saw churches, went to Kokopo to see the remains of the Gunantambu mansion built by Queen Emma in the 1880s. The war and cultural museum near, drove past many of the tunnels used to turn the island into a fortress in WWII, saw barges stored in huge tunnels, the volcanic activity observatory with great views of Simpson Bay and Tavurvur the most active volcano.

Saw lots of friendly people and locals selling their wares.

Road very inconsistent, due to damage from volcanic eruption so slow moving around.

Apparently there are in PNG over 700 different ethic groups mostly dependent on subsistence agriculture.

We left PNG at 17:30 enroute to Okinawa Japan, not expected there until Tuesday 13th March.

Tomorrow 8th March is day 61 the halfway point of our cruise when we also cross the Equator again.

All good here lots of love to all back home - Rob and Mo.
