Evening / Afternoon All
Just arrived New York, Pier 88 Manhattan aboard Queen Elizabeth Tuesday 16th January 2018, it is 07:30 as I write this. We have twice before arrived in New York aboard QE2 and berthed in Brooklyn, which is some 10 miles from Manhattan. From pier 88 it is a 25 minute walk to Time Square and 42nd Street so we are well placed to see some sights, if we brave the weather. Its a cold -3°C clear day, with some snow predicted for later.
We have some great news and some changes to our plans in New York. A key part of today was we had hoped to meet up with cousin John Cleary of family history fame. He lives in Kinnelon, New Jersey some 35 miles from Manhattan. I got an email on Sunday to say he had fallen and badly injured his shoulder while snow clearing. At first he had hoped to recover without treatment. Things have worsened for him, both in terms of pain and reducing mobility. After visits to specialists he is due to undergo surgery today. So he is unable to meet us, in New York, that's a disappointment but understandable.
We have had an unexpected free day in New York, so we walked off the ship about 10:00am and have been walking since, we are both on about 10,500 steps so far. Walking from Pier 88 towards and then along Broadway, then up and down W 42St ending in Grand Central Station to access free WiFi. The photos of Mo and I and the napkin were in Pershing Square Cafe where we succumbed to Banana Pankcakes at Mo's request.
The good news, we sail south to warmer climes, Fort Lauderdale, Miami 16:00 tomorrow. On the second sector of our cruise. Arrive there on Saturday.
Other good news is that Tom and and Ali have named their daughter I found out yesterday but was waiting to get time to update you by email.
So granddaughter two is called Caitlin Grace Owen ( I am told Caitlin is pronounced Kate Lyn!).
Mo and are healthy, happy, well rested and settled in to our cabin and enjoying the food, company and entertainment. Reached 21 games Scrabble so far and managed the gym when unable to walk on the promenade deck. PD having been closed due to high winds. That has been 5 of the previous 9 days. Worst day last Wednesday just before detour to Ponta Delgarda in the Azores where we stopped instead of Bermuda to avoid worse storms than the 6-7m swell, with 50 knot winds we experienced on Tuesday last.
Having said that the ship Queen Elizabeth has performed very well, I have only had two travel sickness tablets and have felt worse when crossing the Bay of Biscay, and in the Med, in 30 knot winds and with around 4-5 metres of swell. So impressed with myself and the ship, Mo is a better seafarer than I. Mo had no tablets just used acupuncture wrist bands.
Any how dear friends nothing else to report today, about to walk back to the beautiful QE.
May post a few more pictures here of NY later tomorrow.
Anyhow all the very best to you and yours from me and mine and us and ours. Hope everyone is well and the weather in the UK is OK. We are good.
Lots of love
Rob & Mo.
P.S. This did not leave/get sent until 15:00 NY time, GMT-5
